Cars are very important in the lives of most people in most Western European societies.  They are much more than a means of transport; they are a way of maintaining freedom of movement and freedom of choice in both work and leisure.  They are also status symbols, expressing image, style and wealth.  On a practical level, cars represent a major expense in the budgets of most households and the main way of shopping in out-of-town supermarkets.
